September 21st: International Day of Peace

The Center, along with the Student Nonviolence Involvement Committee, the Rhode Island Peace Flag Project, the Gay Straight Alliance, Feinstein Center for Service Learning, will host our annual International Day of Peace Celebrations this Wednesday, Sep. 21st. Join us on the URI Quad for festivities and "Free Hugs for World Peace" between 12noon-3pm, then again for a candlelight vigil from 7pm-8pm, followed by a screening of Jeremy Gilley's film "Peace One Day". International Nonviolence Summer Institute June 6th-17th, 2011

The Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies hosted its 10th Annual International Nonviolence Summer Institute, at the Multicultural Center on the URI campus this summer. The Summer Institute certified 60 participants, representing 14 countries and 13 US states, as trainers of the principles and practices of nonviolent conflict reconciliation, based on the philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King, JR. 

Bruce W. Tancrell Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser

The family and friends of Level II Certified Kingian Nonviolence Trainer Bruce Tancrell were happy to award the first annual Bruce W. Tancrell Memorial Scholarship, in his name, to Nana Yaw Osei-Darkwa, Founder and Executive Director of Youth Icons, Ghana. A Pasta Dinner Fundraiser will be held to contribute funds for next year's scholarship recipient on Saturday, October 1st from 6pm-11pm at Knights of Columbus, Cranston, RI. For more information,

Gandhi Essay Contest

Planning for the 2nd Annual Gandhi Essay Contest is underway! Hosted by the URI Honors Program and the Center for Nonviolence & Peace Studies, this essay contest celebrates the life teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and encourages 8th grade students in RI to think critically about, personally connect with, and be challenged by his legacy of nonviolence. See last year's finalists and check for updates on the new essay prompt here. This year's prompt will offically be released on October 2nd, Gandhi's birthday.

Pennies for Peace in Narragansett, RI

3rd Grade students at Narragansett Elementary participated in the Pennies for Peace campaign throughout the month of April. The Center Celebrates NVP Graduates

The Center celebrated 2011 URI graduates involved with the Nonviolence & Peace Studies minor and trainings this summer.  Ryan Alexander- a Kingian Nonviolence Level II Trainer- and Gillian Bell- a Kingian Nonviolence Level II Trainer and NVP Minor- both graduated as members of the Student Nonviolence Involvement Committee.
